Press Release - March 12, 2020

In a continuing effort to keep parents and students of GISD informed of developments surrounding the COVID-19 (Coronavirus), we are providing some helpful links that we are also monitoring in order to make timely and appropriate decisions.

Currently, GISD does not have plans to cancel classes or extend the current Spring Break vacation. However, we anticipate some announcements at the state level that may or may not affect our decision. The agencies expected to make major announcements include TEA, UIL, and the office of the Governor.

Superintendent Roger Dees will be participating in the daily, state-wide conference calls mentioned in this update:

TEA Update: COVID-19 Initial Guidance and FAQs

From the TEA update: “We encourage all districts to continue calmly communicating facts and pertinent information to students, parents, and staff. As Governor Greg Abbott and Dr. John Hellerstedt, Commissioner of the State Department of Health Services, made clear in a joint message earlier this week, the approach to COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses should be one of common sense, everyday action.”

According to the Texas Department of Health and Human Services, there are only a total of 23 confirmed cases of COVID-19, none of which are in Lee or surrounding counties.
